The Lodge Experience

Hippo Hills is a private 5-bedroom luxury villa situated on the banks of the Crocodile River within the Ngwenya Lodge resort, just 10 minutes (9km) from the Crocodile Bridge Gate of the Kruger National Park.

Check-in: 14:00 (Latest arrival recommended by 18:00 for ease of navigation).

No. The roads from Johannesburg and within the resort are tarred or well-maintained gravel. A standard sedan is perfectly suitable for reaching the lodge and for self-driving within the southern section of the Kruger National Park.

Yes, the Southern Kruger is a high-risk malaria area. We strongly advise consulting your doctor regarding prophylaxis before arrival and using the mosquito repellents. You can use these resources to give you more information:

The villa sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 private en-suite bedrooms. To maintain the luxury experience, we do not allow over-occupancy beyond 10 people (including children).

As a premier self-catering destination, the kitchen is fully equipped with a stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, and tumble dryer. We provide basic cleaning materials, but you should bring your own consumables (spices, oils, coffee pods, etc.).

Yes, the villa is serviced daily from Monday to Saturday (included in your rate). Sunday service can be arranged for a nominal additional fee.

While the water is treated, we recommend bringing bottled water for drinking, or using the filtered water options available at the resort shop.
Safari & Activities

Frequently! The villa features a large viewing deck and an infinity pool overlooking the Crocodile River. Guests often spot elephants, hippos, buffalo, and even lions or leopards directly from the patio without leaving the house.

You have three options:

  1. Self-Drive: Enter via Crocodile Bridge Gate (9km away).

  2. Guided Drives: Can be booked directly at the Kruger Gate.

  3. Resort Safaris: Guided open-vehicle drives can be arranged through the Ngwenya Lodge game center.

Yes. Daily conservation fees are payable at the gate. If you have a Wild Card, please ensure it is valid and bring your ID/Passport for entry.

Resort Amenities (Ngwenya Access)

As part of the Ngwenya precinct, you have full access to:

  • 6 Swimming pools and a putt-putt course.

  • Tennis courts and a games room (table tennis, pool, Xbox).

  • The Le Fera Restaurant & Bar (for the days you don’t wish to cook).

  • The Mbali Day Spa for luxury treatments.

  • A convenience store (Kiosk) for essentials like ice, charcoal, and snacks.

We offer complimentary Wi-Fi at the villa. Please note that cell service (especially Cell C and Telkom) can be intermittent due to our remote bush location.

  • Documents: ID/Passports (essential for Kruger Gate and resort check-in).

  • Gear: Binoculars, camera, and bird/animal guidebooks.

  • Clothing: Neutral-colored clothing, a warm jacket for evening drives, and sturdy walking shoes.

  • Supplies: Charcoal/wood for the braai, and your favorite specialized food and drink items. The lodge is self catering so you will need to bring all the food and drinks you need. Alternatively there are stores very close that you can make use of. 

  • Protection: Mosquito repellent and sun cream.

Ngwenya Lodge offers popular, strictly catch-and-release fishing in its on-site dams, featuring tigerfish, bass, and kurper (tilapia). Located along the Crocodile River, the lodge provides a scenic, family-friendly fishing experience, with tigerfish often caught using chicken heart and steel traces in the larger dams.
